Discipleship Beyond: Turkey

Have you ever heard of Troy and the Trojan Horse? This ancient city guarded passage between the Mediterranean Ocean and the Black Sea and is the setting for one of mythology’s most famous epics. The story of the beauty of Helen, the pride and wrath of Achilles, the cunning of Odysseus, the meddling of the Greek gods, and the eventual defeat of the Trojans is one of the most enduring tales in all literature. Today the strategic city of Troy sits on the coastal plains of Turkey.

Maybe you’ve heard the story of Noah and his ark? After the most incredible packing job ever, Noah sealed up the ark before the rising waters of the great flood. Genesis 8.4 records “In the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, the ark rested upon the mountains of Ararat.” The slopes of Mt. Ararat and the skies that held the first rainbow are also in Turkey!

When Abraham wanted a wife for Isaac, he sent a servant to the city of Haran to find her. Later, after the fallout between Isaac’s sons, Jacob and Esau, Jacob fled to Haran to live with Laban. All 12 sons of Jacob (later the tribes of Israel) were born in Haran. All four of the Biblical patriarchs have their roots in Turkey! Saul of Tarsus, later Paul the Apostle, wrote most of the books of the New Testament. Before he did that, he gathered with other followers of Jesus in the ancient city of Antioch to form one of the first Christian churches. This city, located in Turkey, was the staging point for ALL of Paul’s ministry journeys!

As you can see, Turkey is loaded with history and many people have left their mark upon this land! Israel and Egypt are the two places most often associated with the Bible, but Turkey rivals them in history, beauty and significance!
